When Leonard Matlovich and Copy Berg came to Lambda Legal for assistance in 1976, we could only afford to underwrite one of their cases. The Board of Directors opted to support Berg’s case, while Cary Boggan graciously offered to represent Matlovich pro bono, so long as Leonard could cover some of the costs of the appeal. Sadly, all three of these pioneering crusaders against the military’s anti-gay policies died in their forties from complications related to AIDS.
